Hi everyone, time for an update. I have noticed that Pyramid Electrics has found themselves a shop front in Gordonvale. You will find them in Gordon Street opposite the tennis courts.

While down that end of town you may like to visit the newest cafe in town. Julie's Tasty Treats (Gordon Street opposite the tennis courts). Currently open 5.30am to approx 4.30pm. You can start the day with her 'Big Breakfast', coffee, cakes, sandwiches, chips, roast roll etc.

Gordonvale Pyramid Race - 20th August 2011

A full day extravaganza including a 5km fun run, a cycling criterium, a 100m dash for cash, markets, food stalls, entertainment , amusement rides and a grand finale of fireworks. 2pm sees the 52nd running of the 12km Great Pyramid Mountain Race. This year the gruelling 922m ascent up Walsh's Pyramid and the mad scramble back down will be completed in about 1 hour 20 minutes. It is recognised as one of the toughest endurance races in the country.

I am sure you could find a gift for Mother's day amongst the variety of stalls.

The weather is wonderful.

Markets are in the centre of Gordonvale in Norman Park directly opposite the sugar mill.

Open 8am - 12 noon.

If you get hungry, head over to IGA Gordonvale and outside you will find the most amazing sausage sizzle.....yes...they are raising money for Relay for Life and would love your support.

Then if you still have some free time pop up to the Mulgrave Settlers Museum which is on Gordon street and opposite the side of the mill.

They are open 10am - 2pm and have a wonderful display of the history of Gordonvale including the blacksmiths, technology through the years, war memorabilia.

$4.00 entry.

More to add....I have just been down to the Gordonvale and the place is a buzzing.

I discovered amazing ARTWORK by Gordonvale locals in a shop directly opposite the markets on Norman Street......near the Mollers Solicitors.

and there is more.....

if you wander down to the local bakery Piefection you will find more terrific artwork by students from Gordonvale High School.

Now this is a must see as my daughter has work in there and achieved an A+ for it. :-)

September Gordonvale Markets

These months seem to be coming around quick yes, the markets are on again tomorrow at Gordonvale. Just drive to centre of town and you will find everyone. I am sure with the weather the way it is today there will be 40 + stores. They go from 8am to midday. But most stalls are up and running around 7ish.

Don't forget to pop over to the Mulgrave Settler Museum (Gordon Street) which is open at 10am to 2pm.....directly adjacent to the mill. Maybe coffee at Bernard's Patisserie (Gordon Street), Pie Perfection (Norman Street) or Devonshire Tea at the Florist (Norman Street).

Pyramid Race is over for another year

Well that is it for another year and what a fantastic day it was. The weather was perfect although a little chilly to start with when setting up the markets. Soon there was coffee to be had and lots of people to talk to. Cyclists flew around all the corners of Norman Park to start the sporting events off for the day. Lots of entertainment was to be had in the park and surrounding areas with the Annual Quilt Show at the Presbyterian Church , Art Display in the RSL hall, Vintage Car display at Parkview, non stop bands and dancers in the Rotunda. Wandering through the park were people on stilts, clowns, and mysterious people with painted faces and costume who would turn still as a statue if you looked at them.

Sorry at this stage I don't know the winners name or time. It was a male. The first female in was three seconds shy of the Women's record and my female friend who enjoys this race (silly) came in at a respectable time of 1hr 46mins.....slow in her books. She was around the top ten. I will post more info when I know.

Yes, it has finally arrived.........Pyramid Race Day.

It all starts at 7.30 am with the Markets which will be there all day. Followed closely by the start of the Criterium (Bike Race) at 9.00am and the entertainment just keeps coming. Mulgrave Settlers Museum

I have been trying to create an Open flag for our local Museum 'The Mulgrave Settlers Museum', as we are down in the back corner of town directly opposite the mill. The current signage they have at the moment is a wooden Open sign that is close to the building and you can see if you are driving past. But if you are visiting the town or even a local you don't tend to drive down the street that we are on as people tend to think it mill property. So I started out wanting to make a teardrop flag that I have seen in the car yards etc. I could find an appropriate pole to use that would bend and hold the weight of the flag.

So went for this flag option. I bought a length (2.7m) of PVC piping and an elbow joint. Cut off 50cm for the top section of the flag. The flag is made from a material that could be used in a spray jacket or shower curtain....don't know what they call it. Which hemmed all the way round. I then printed out Outline letters on the computer to spell out the word OPEN. Cut these letters out to create a stencil. Then used my new spouncer and painted the letters. Yesterday, with hammer and block of wood in tow I hammered another slightly bigger piece of PVC piping into the ground. It was only 50cm long but wider. This will remain in the garden bed continually so that we can just slot the flag in and out.

When I showed hubby he said the lettering is wrong way which they are if you are looking from town. I did try to figure out the best way to paint the words on. Didn't think of the wind direction being the deciding point which hubby pointed out. That a majority of time it blows from the north. Luckily I have a second flag ready to go and will just paint the letters the opposite way.

Anyways, hoping this flag will catch someones attention.

Gordonvale Junior Touch 2010 Season

Yes, it's that time of year again.....Touch Football. Sorry I am a little slow to think of this as the two sign on nights have happened but that does not stop you. As nominations don't close until 24th August.

Touch Footy happens on a Friday night down at Alley Park. Starting at 6pm and last games starting at 8pm.

There are teams available for boys and girls ages:
Under 6/7, Under 8/9/10, Under 11/12 and Under 13/14/15

Under 6/7 and 8/9/10 will play at 6pm
Under 11/12 will play at 7pm
Under 13/14/15 will play at 8pm

Cost....now this has to be the best bit as I can't think of another sport that is so cheap these days and you get a T Shirt thrown in.

$40 for the first child registering
$30 for each additional child
$15 (If a player is registered and financial member of a senior competition)

Photos of Behana Gorge that I took on our walk last Wednesday. Photos aren't that great as I have taken them on my mobile phone. However, the walk is well worth it as the scenery is amazing. Travelling south from Gordonvale (from Caltex Lights intersection) on the Bruce Highway drive for about (5km) 10mins turn right onto Behana Gorge Road. This is a long access road which will take you through cane fields. Just keep following until you come to the carpark and end of the road. This is the start of the walking track through the yellow gate. You will need a moderate fitness, some water and during summer your swimmers. A camera is always a plus too. The walk in will take approx 45mins. No dogs allowed.

Morning everyone, it's not too late to head over to the Gordonvale markets in Norman Park. The park is packed with stall holders and people. Every time I go the markets seem to be bigger and bigger. I would say there is easily 50 stalls there today. Pretty amazing since it is school holidays and a little overcast. No rain though. There are plants, jewellery, chickens, art, food, fruit and vegies and much much more. I have bought some of the yummiest pineapples for only $2.00 each. Also two punnets of lettuce to restock my vegie garden....only $2.50 each. Also caught up with lots of wonderful friends and our dog enjoyed the walk as well thinking that everyone was there to see him. :-)

When you are finished at the markets you could stroll on over to the Settlers Museum which is further down Gordon street and opposite the mill. Go in and say hi to Sarina. Adults $4. Learn a lot about the history of the sugar industry in Gordonvale and how Gordonvale came to be.

Dave at Cairns Bookbinders (07 40565877) in Norman Street (Gordonvale) in between the Video Shop and Eagle Boys is having a grand opening for his newly renovated second hand bookstore. Tea, Coffee and lots of yummy cakes are available to help celebrate. There is also an author by the name of Travis there signing copies of his book. Wonderful handmade journals and cards are on sale there too.

Bumped into my good friend Anita at the Book Shop ....... she had just returned from her run up 'The Pyramid'. I think a little bit of training for the race coming up in August. Yes, she looked well and looked like she had just run down the street and back. Not up 922m and down again. Amazing.

Yes the markets are on again this Saturday and the weather is perfect for a wander through the stalls. Last month I was at the markets and although it was drizzly rain all morning there were at least 40 stall holders set up and continuous visitors strolling around. So this Saturday should be packed.

The photos I have posted today are landmarks around Norman Park where you will find the markets. Thought it might help get your bearings. Things are a changing in Gordonvale

Hi everyone, time for an update.

We have a wonderful new patisserie opened in Gordonvale. Yes, I went along and tried a coffee and cake for you.....perfect! I had the Intense Orange cake if you are looking for something yummy. This place is called Bernards Patisserie located at 76 Gordon Street, Gordonvale.

The Gordonvale Florist is amid renovations now and I have heard a whisper that there will be 'High Teas' being served soon. The florist is in the main street of Gordonvale located at 74 Norman Street. Not sure when the grand re-opening will happen but I will be sure to try this out for you as well. :-)

Another bird has told me that the bookshop attached to Cairns Bookbinders has plans of a facelift. Apparently, some beautiful lush curtains and a lounge area to create a quiet little reading nook so you can peruse your books before buying. I will keep you posted on this one and let you know when I see some changes.

Don't forget while you are in town to check out the Mulgrave Museum (60 Gordon Street) and find out how this wonderful town came to be. Not only do they have terrific displays and heaps of information but quality books for sale on various subjects and families of Gordonvale. You will also find some souvenirs in the form of postcards and teaspoons.

Come and check out the Gordonvale Markets - Saturday, 1st May 8am - 12pm. Should be a lovely cool day maybe not so bright as these photos but we can hope. Girl Guides are having a cake stall to raise money for their team in Relay for Life so come and support them.

Markets can be found in Norman Park on Norman Street.....centre of Gordonvale.

Don't forget to go over and check out the Mulgrave Settler Museum while you are in town. They are open 10am - 2pm this Saturday. They now have a model of the cane barracks in the centre of the museum and other pieces of history on the start of cane in the area. Great cartoons of canecutters from an early era. As well as their Blacksmith display, a kitchen and laundry setting from days on by and last but not least the dentist chair and real teeth.

You will find the Museum on Gordon street across the railway lines on the left hand side as you head towards the mill.

While driving through Gordonvale last Sunday I noticed a new sign. Yes, in the Gordon Street shops was a new sign in Navy Blue and Gold - Bernard's Patisserie (wholesale). Looks a little flash for Gordonvale can't wait to see what this all about.

Hi everyone....boy, have I been slack with this blog. I will try and get into a weekly post of what is happening here in Gordonvale.

The above photo is a view from my window...thought it would should what the weather was like. Grey and overcast. So maybe another showery, cooler day. My thermometer here (7.10am) on my desk says 25.5C so very pleasant.

What is happening in Gordonvale. Well from the signs around the place every type of sporting club is having a sign on.

The Mulgrave Museum has opened it's doors for a the New Year.

The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10AM to 2PM. Adults - $4.00, Seniors - $3.00, and children $2.00

The members have been busy over the Christmas break changing the central display. The centre of the museum now shows information on the Mulgrave Mill and sugar cutting from days gone by. Wonderful cartoon illustrations from that era. Some one has taken the time to recreate a model cane cutters barracks. The remainder of the museum .......some displays are still the same but others have been added to and rearranged. Have you seen the dentist chair that everyone had to sit in....or the tray of teeth?

Places to have a Coffee in Gordonvale

Looking for somewhere to sit and have a coffee after checking out Gordonvale. Try Pie Perfection at 78 Norman Street directly across from Norman Park. Ph 405465425. Brilliant pies. My lunch time favourite is the Beef and Pea pie. A friend of mine recently fell in love with their cream buns. They also sell sandwiches made to order.

Another great place for a coffee is Heidi's Cafe which is still in Norman Street but in the next block. Ph 40563949. Wonderful fish and chips at Heidi's too if you happen to still be around for lunch.

I will have to get around to taking some photos of the main street to add to this blog. One day soon.

November Gordonvale Markets

The next Gordonvale Markets will be Saturday, 7th November. They should be huge. The last couple of months the markets seem to have doubled and I think they will grow still as we get closer to Christmas. So see you there. They start at 8am to Noon. If you happen to be earlier I am sure you will find a stall holder that is willing to sell their wares.

Very nice Licorice available. Dog biscuits that dogs love and plenty of plants to keep any gardener busy.

I heard someone asking how hard it is to climb Walsh's Pyramid. I have been lucky enough to have been up three times. From experience I would say you have to be reasonably fit, take plenty of water and leave early before it gets too hot.

I walk about 4km every day so that is my level of fitness. Each time after climbing the Pyramid I had very sore legs for a couple of days. Oh, and I am not like the runners...it takes me close to 6 hours for the round trip...thats with time to enjoy the view at the top.

If you go as near to the race as possible you will find the track very clearly marked but it is always good to go up with someone as we always seem to go off track a little around the half way point. With extra eyes we are back on track. Take a nice snack to enjoy while you are sitting at the top enjoying the view. Their are a couple of huge boulders to sit on way up there. Have fun.

You can get to the base of the Pyramid by driving along the Bruce Highway passed the Caltex and over the new Green Patch Bridge, there is a turn off on the right hand side when heading south.

Above are the Gordonvale monthly markets that are happening right now. These photos were taken and hour ago. You have until midday to visit everyone. Be sure to check out the licorice as it is very yummy.

1pm the Annual Flower Show is open to the public for a small fee at the All Saints Anglican Church. 7 Church Street.

The Equestrian Club have a gymkhana happening in Vico Street Gordonvale (Cyrstalbrook). Horses are everywhere.

Southern Suburbs have a home game of football at Alley Park.

Come to the Gordonvale All Saints Anglican Annual Flower Show today and see this wonderful floral display (received 1st prize in it's section) in real life. This display is created by a 13yo image what the adults have created. Everything starts around noon. You could make a day of it as the Monthly Gordonvale Markets are on this morning also. Then later in the arvo you could go and cheer on Southern Suburbs in the local football games at Alley Park.

Gordonvale Markets are on the first Saturday of every month 7am to Noon. You will find them in Norman Park located in the towns centre. The photos above show the hive of activity at the July Markets. Such a wonderful day for the locals to catch up with one another and for the tourists to see our local wares.

You will find plants, fruit and vegetables, handmade craft items such as cards, wood worked toys, kids clothing, beading etc. dog biscuits, human biscuits ;-) , books. The Scouts normally have a sausage sizzle in the middle which always smells so yummy.

August has two markets. 1st of August, the regular one for the month.

A special markets on the 15th August as part of the activities organised for the 'Pyramid Race'.

Head towards the sugar mill in Gordonvale, across the train and cane crossing you will find the carpark on the left hand side. This building was purpose-built to house objects used by settlers in the area then called Nelson in the late 1800s. The aboriginal, miners' and timber cutters' displays are realistically set against a 40 metre rainforest backdrop. There is a fully equipped blacksmith's workshop. Furniture and homemakers' aides in the pioneer woman's domain demonstrate the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the era, plus a few luxuries. Boats and pack horses brought supplies through Packers Camp to the goldfields, and artifacts hold many memories. Documents recording lives of early settlers are a useful resource for genealogy research. School children can engage with their local history, see some of the tools their grandparents actually used and learn of the impact on the community of the 503rd Parachute Regiment based there during World War Two. A hand-crafted Chinese Joss is in safe keeping along with memorabilia from prominent local citizens.

The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10AM to 2PM, however is closed from December and January (Queensland Xmas School Holidays). Adults - $4.00, Seniors - $3.00, and children $2.00

If you are a resident of Gordonvale, Cairns or the surrounding areas you may be interested in the cardmaking/scrapbooking days that Lauren Colless has organised.

Lauren has organised the Gordonvale Community Hall to be booked twice a month for the purposes of a cardmaking/scrapbooking day and evening - bring along your existing projects you're working on, or there will be a limited amount of kits available for purchase. The times are:- the first Monday of the month from 9am-3pm (beg July 09); and - the third Friday evening from 7pm-midnight (beg Aug 09). Cost is $2 to cover tea/coffee and snacks, please bring your own lunch or dinner, or we can order in/send out. For more information, please email me.

Gordonvale All Saints Anglican Church Flower Show

The annual Gordonvale Anglican Church Flower Show is to be held 1st and 2nd August 2009.

7 Church Street Gordonvale

The church, as usual, will be cleared of pews and sanctuary furnishings and the ladies will transform the sanctuary into a display of flower arrangements, while the craft and floral exhibits are arranged in the body of the church. Fruit, vegetable, cakes, sweets and jams are exhibited in the hall.

Marques fill the grounds and music fills the church. Even the date of this event is historical as it has been held on the first Saturday in August for at least the last fifty years. On Sunday morning a traditional Anglican church service occurs, but with an unusual variation. Instead of heavy pews already removed, chairs much lighter for a quick carry into the church are brought in. The service is then held among the flowers, a once a year uplifting setting.

Walsh's Pyramid (922m) in the background. The Pyramid just seems to be asking to be climbed. I am lucky enough to say that I have been up and down four times in the past 6 years. My time is approx 6 hours for the round trip.

Once a year for the past 49 years Gordonvale has held 'The Great Pyramid race. So come along to the 50th Anniversary of the Great Pyramid Race this year - a mountain race from Gordonvale, to the top of Walsh's Pyramid and back. Race day is the 15th August 2009, starting at 2pm. It apparently, began 49 years ago, in a local Gordonvale pub, with two cane farmers having an 'argument' after the end of a hard days work! They decided to settle this 'argument', with a race to the peak of the nearby Walsh's Pyramid. This was (and still is) no ordinary race. A wager was made between the two cane farmers to see who could run up in the quickest possible time. This race created so much interest that the local bookie took bets on which cane farmer was 'right'. From this humorous start, this race became a full day event with the ""Great Pyramid Mountain Race"" now having up to 100 runners. It now incorporates other sporting events like the one metre Dash for Cash, five kilometre Road Race, Criterium and many more. Festival atmosphere with markets, rides for the kids and entertainment as well as wood chop demonstrations, food and plenty more. The event will finish with a street parade and fireworks.
